Lil Shredders Kids Camp

I admit I was a tad bit skeptical about a bicycle program and children in the summer… Isn’t that a parent’s job? Summer is too busy and too hot here in St. George??  But the more I thought about it I realized they were the perfect audience.  Children are the future. This might be their first and only introduction to the biking world. We could make a positive impression of a healthy, clean hobby.  Bike riding is a physical skill that provides lifetime rewards, and this program could be a part of a larger effort to make an impact in someone’s life.

I was a little nervous getting it all started and to come up with a good game plan, but Curtis and I brainstormed and everything seemed to fall into place. We came up with a fun group name with some basic details and hit the ground running.  Summer Shredders for children 5-12 years met for the first time at Red Rock Bicycle on Tuesday, June 6th.  We had introductions and taught them the basic ABCs of bike safety.  I challenged myself to remember all their names while Curtis did the teaching.  We watched a fun bike skills video with some unbelievable tricks that wowed all the kids. We set a challenge for them to ride at least 10 minutes a day throughout the summer and presented them with a chart.

My youngest child is 20 years old and so this grandma was getting right back into the grind.  The kids were great and we had different skill levels and confidence among the group of 22. We  practiced bike skills with a cones course in the parking lot and then sent them off with a smile.  July 11th we had a packed house with over 30 kids, many of whom were new from June.  Shirley, Colt, Joey, Curtis and Cheryl all participated as ride leaders as we ventured out into the real world on a bike field trip to Town Square. Splash pads and popsicles were a hit. More bicycle skills practice time proved to be helpful as I witnessed several children improving and socializing amongst each other.  We finished off the summer on August 8th with another field trip and a bike rodeo with 5 different stations.  We had donuts and awards for the summer achievement charts and what started out in my mind as a possible waste of time and effort turned out to be a positive experience for everyone involved. I learned that it’s good for others to teach your children and summer in St. George is not too hot to have some bike fun.  The overwhelming responses from the kids and parents have motivated us to continue the program throughout the year.

Get kids busy – clean air – healthy activity. Lets do it!!

My daughter had a blast at this bike camp. I’m so grateful for Red rock, Margaret, and everyone else who helped put this thing together. It was a fun change from the normal summer activities. The kids learned a lot and had a great time. I hope these by classes continue.
