Turbos y Tacos

A couple of years ago, if you would have told me my favorite part of going on a date with my husband was how we got there and how we got home, I would have looked at you like you were crazy. But here’s the funny thing about life…the universe has a way of nudging you toward your passion. And if your heart is open to following a new path, that’s when the real magic begins!

One sunny afternoon in May 2016, I rode my little commuter bike downtown to the Ironman village to meet up with my husband, Marc, and some friends. Our dear friends, Craig and Di Shanklin, had been telling us about how much they loved their new Specialized Turbo ebikes. Truthfully, I wasn’t very educated on what an ebike really was and how it worked. But, boy was that about to change! Craig had ridden his ebike there and asked if I wanted to take it for a spin. With the very first downstroke of the pedal, a squeal of joy escaped my lips! What in the world? This is the most fun I’ve had on a bicycle in all my life!!! It was like riding a bike with a rocket booster. And I was immediately hooked. As I zoomed around the sidewalks of Town Square, my smile told the story. Ebike = joy! Reluctantly, I returned the bike to Craig, looked at my husband and said, “I want one!” Recognizing my obvious exuberance, they both laughed and agreed that, indeed, I needed an ebike.

There was no denying it, fate had brought us together. I couldn’t stop talking about it. Oh, the fun we could have! Fortunately, when it comes to bikes, it doesn’t take much arm-twisting to convince Marc to pull the trigger. And within that very same week, he made all my ebike dreams come true when he picked one up for each of us! Since that time, we’ve been inseparable. In just a year and a half, I’ve racked up over 2000 miles on that thing! The running joke every time we see the Shanklins is, “how many miles do you have now?” Up and down Snow Canyon and everywhere in between, I can’t get enough! It brings me so much joy! And I haven’t even gotten to the part about our bike dates yet!

Dates nights are essential. Every weekend, the two of us sneak away for a bite to eat and some alone time…and we love it!  But with the addition of our ebikes, they’ve gotten even better. Pedaling to dinner with my very favorite bike buddy is really something special. Together, we enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of our beautiful surroundings. Tires rolling over colorful, crunchy leaves. The last drops of golden sunlight peeking through the trees. The smell of backyard barbecues and the sound of children playing outside. Man, we live in an amazing place. There’s so much out there to soak up!

Last weekend, we invited our friends, Craig and Di, to join us for a double date. We met up and pedaled downtown for some delicious Mexican food at Angelica’s. We dined outside on the patio and took full advantage of the pleasant November evening. From there, we rode down to the George Street Festival that was in full swing. Visited a few local businesses, ran into more cycling friends, toured Chef Alfredo’s Ristorante Italiano, listened to some live music, warmed ourselves by the fire, and partook of some scrumptious cupcakes from TwentyFive Main. Then, with full bellies, happy hearts and plenty of battery left, we cruised the dark, quiet streets back home.

It’s a difficult thing to explain if you haven’t experienced it yourself, but there’s just something about cycling that adds an extra layer of awesome to any outing. The next time you’re headed out for a bite to eat or a quick errand, consider leaving your car in the garage. I think you’ll be surprised how much there is to enjoy about the journey, and not just the destination.
